Searching for a Relocation Job Went Exactly as Expected
Before fully committing to the move I figured I should at least check if any company would pay to relocate me. It seemed like a long shot but worth looking into anyway. If something worked out that would be awesome. If not then no big deal.
I checked LinkedIn and browsed expat job sites. I even went directly to a bunch of international company websites. I used every filter I could think of including visa sponsorship relocation assistance and remote work possibilities. I cleaned up my resume and applied to anything that even slightly matched my skill set.
Honestly most of it was just junk. Companies asked for fluent Dutch or specified that only EU citizens could apply. Some job descriptions had requirements so narrow it was obvious they had no plans to hire anyone from outside the country. Even the roles offering relocation ended up having so many restrictions that they weren’t realistic. In the end it went exactly how you’d expect.

Voordat we ons volledig stortten op de verhuizing, dacht ik dat het slim was om te kijken of er bedrijven waren die de verhuiskosten zouden dekken. Het leek me onwaarschijnlijk, maar het was het proberen waard. Als het zou lukken, top. Zo niet, dan ook prima.
Ik keek op LinkedIn en struinde expatbanensites af. Ik bezocht ook websites van internationale bedrijven. Ik gebruikte alle filters die ik kon vinden, zoals visumsponsoring, hulp bij verhuizen en werken op afstand. Ik heb mijn cv opgepoetst en gesolliciteerd op alles wat ook maar een beetje paste bij wat ik kan.
Eerlijk gezegd was het meeste gewoon onzin. Bedrijven vroegen om vloeiend Nederlands of gaven aan dat alleen EU-burgers mochten solliciteren. Sommige vacatures waren zo specifiek dat het overduidelijk was dat ze nooit van plan waren iemand van buiten aan te nemen. Zelfs bij banen waarbij verhuizen werd aangeboden stonden zoveel voorwaarden dat het uiteindelijk nergens op sloeg. Het liep dus precies zoals je zou verwachten.
