toy photography as a hobby

Picture this, it’s the year 2019 and I start to miss being creative and a photographer. I wanted to know more about lighting and flash and I didn’t want to practice on boring still life subjects. At the time I had a lot of action figures and little toys from my childhood. I decided these are perfect for subjects since I can control everything. I started posting on instagram and I started getting a few likes here and there. I really got in my head that I needed to do well on social media to be a good photographer. It’s 3 or so years later and I realize how silly I was. I am not upset at myself for thinking that way. It was a great lesson to learn and that exercise helped me practice and see light better. I really only edited the jpegs and it was really fun. Much like everything in my life, I got bored doing the same thing with the same subject matter. I started to photograph Lego and that is when I really fell down the rabbit hole. I got really obsessed and spent a lot of time and money on a hobby that I felt was really important to me. I think I just wanted to buy stuff and lego was an “affordable” way to spend money. Long story short I developed a character named Lego Pizza Person. I wanted him to be me with a pizza outfit on. This presented an interesting challenge to photograph since the pizza Lego part is very restricting. I loved taking these photos for awhile. It soon transitioned from a fun hobby to work I had to do on Instagram. So I abandoned it and stopped trying. I still put together the occasional Lego set, but I stepped way back from the hobby.

Now picture this, it’s January 13, 2023 and I decide it’s time to clean up and reorganize my work studio. It’s truly a mess but I will be clearing the area that I made to take photos. I will be taking photos of toys again. This time these photos are for me and my site. I might post them on Instagram, but I really don’t see the rush to do so. I am looking forward to taking photos like this again.
